UK Administration Cancels Substantial Loan for Mozambican Gas Initiative Following Environmental and Security Worries
The British administration has withdrawn a disputed $1.15 billion loan supporting a giant LNG development in the African nation of Mozambique, after increasing accusations that the venture contributes to the climate emergency and insurgent unrest in the area.
Government Announcement and Rationale
Business Secretary the Business Secretary declared that the UK would terminate its backing for the Mozambique LNG project, coming five years after the deal provoked bitter opposition from campaigners over its effects on human rights, security, and the environment.
“Although these choices are never simple, the administration considers that UK funding of this project will not advance the needs of our country,” stated Kyle.
The move was revealed as the scheme's lead company, France-based energy major TotalEnergies, prepares to resume the troubled operation, which has been paused since a violent Islamist insurgency on a local community in 2021 caused hundreds of deaths.
Background and Escalating Risks
The support package was first agreed in 2020. The government stated they had reviewed the risks surrounding the venture and concluded they had increased markedly since that time.
Originally, the UK's export credit agency had argued the scheme would create over 2,000 of UK jobs and could be “game-changing for Mozambique's economic and societal progress.”
However, green campaigns have consistently contended that the African country should be encouraged to channel resources more aggressively in clean power to develop a viable green economy.
Opposition and Appeals for Wider Action
The initiative became a focal point for violence in the area and was also alleged of violating the human rights of residents who were moved when construction activities started.
“It has been blatantly clear for years that this scheme is a failure for the people and for the climate,” said one activist from a sustainable finance organisation. He pressed leading international banks backing the project to withdraw their support, arguing they “can no longer ignore the concerns.”
Another prominent environmental campaigner remarked: “This Mozambique gas project is a huge climate liability, connected to significant human rights abuses. It should never have been given UK public support in the first place.”
The campaigner further called for that the UK should instead support countries like Mozambique by helping them to become resilient to the impacts of the climate crisis and invest in their plentiful clean energy resources.
