The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

An freshly coined acronym emerged a couple of months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is found only in Gaza, as stated by doctors like child health specialists. Typically, it is uncommon for physicians to treat a child who has lost their entire family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of young amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal about many doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare Despite a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that genocidal acts are ongoing. The Israeli government has denied these claims, just as it refutes each claim it is accused of. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, although at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, it seems, is what unity manifests as.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that international journalists are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it historically embodied. An institution that was originally built on peace has transformed into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
