The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
