For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive inside a mental fortress forged from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their quest for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to relive a defining event from Henry's childhood—a discovery that may just hold the means to overcome him permanently.

The Discovery in the Cavern

When she finds Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies not within the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the trauma went deeper than a simple act of survival.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a vessel into a dimension later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to sell to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their version of the tests. This spy in the cavern is that employee.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is revealed about his research, the case most likely held vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, which triggered the awakening of his powers—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the container could have held strange particles that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how Will was controlled by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory demonstrates how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a showdown between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to gain strength.
