Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's response pointed to the infamous Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.
At that time, the league found that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering hard hits on opponents. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.
What Sparked the Latest Dispute
Wilson's reaction came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's remarkable comeback victory over the Giants. Payton suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Relationship
- Wilson was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245 million extension.
- The Broncos went 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to the team brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.
If Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the ugly split between the quarterback and his mentor.
