LA Experiences Record-Breaking High Temperatures Just One Week Following Severe Winter Storm.
In the wake of torrential rains that caused flooding across sections of the city, the City of Angels is now confronting abnormally hot temperatures for late February.
Record-Shattering Heat
During the day Friday, the temperature reached 91°F (33°C) in central LA, per data from meteorologists. This easily surpasses the old record for February 27th, which was 88°F (31°C) and was recorded in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were noted on NWS maps for the region.
Safety Alerts
Forecasters cautioned that Friday's weather posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for those at risk. Their recommendations suggested:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Never leaving children or pets unattended in a car.
An Extreme Shift
This sudden spike in mercury follows closely after a massive storm system that struck the state earlier in the week. That storm delivered high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to higher elevations, triggering evacuation orders for countless residents.
Sadly, the conditions also caused a massive avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
Looking ahead a cooldown will arrive. Readings were expected to fall to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city by Friday night.
Additional areas that reached the 90-degree mark were Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Meanwhile, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were forecast to experience the upper eighties.
In the coming days, downtown LA can expect temperatures in the 80s, with cooler weather on tap for the week ahead.
