New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities issued security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.

“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
