Italian Consumer Group Criticizes Lift Ticket Price Hikes as Completely Unjustified
A leading Italian consumer association are raising alarms over what they describe as entirely unreasonable price increases for lift tickets this winter season, cautioning that alpine sports could become a luxury reserved for affluent individuals.
Significant Cost Rises Throughout the Country
From the majestic Alps and stunning Dolomite mountains in the northern areas to the slopes of Abruzzo, prices are poised to increase by up to 40% compared to 2021 levels, according to fresh research.
The prestigious Dolomiti Superski pass, which provides entry to all 12 resorts in the exclusive Dolomites, will now cost skiers €86 per day during the current winter. In Roccaraso, a daily ski pass is expected to reach €60, after experiencing significant overcrowding last season.
Seasonal Pass Costs and Supplementary Charges
Meanwhile, annual skiing tickets will range from €755 per adult in the Abruzzo region to as much as €1,800 in the northern Aosta area.
The cost of renting winter sports gear has also increased, along with lodging costs and dining expenses throughout mountain resorts.
Consumer Group President Cites Unjustified Increases
The consumer association president, heading the watchdog organization, stated that the cost rises—which operators blame on increased utility expenses, resort maintenance, and requests for superior gear—were completely unjustified and not acceptable.
"Particularly since Italian inflation rates are managed effectively and utility costs, which had increased expenses for mountain facility managers in 2022, have stabilized at previous levels," Melluso noted.
He added that prices have climbed to points where budget-conscious visitors are being forced to abandon their traditional settimana bianca, or winter vacation, altogether.
Tourism Decline and Broader Context
He noted a sharp decline in mountain tourism during the 2024-2025 season, with 1 million fewer Italians hitting the slopes compared to the previous year due to rising costs.
Despite these increases, Italy remains a more affordable destination for skiing enthusiasts in the European region compared to neighboring Switzerland, France, and Austria.
Olympic Context
The increasing worry over winter sports expenses comes as the country prepares to host the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics between February 6 and 22. The nation's top diplomat, the foreign affairs official, recently stated that Italy had presented a plan to the United Nations calling for a "worldwide ceasefire" during the international event.
"With Milan Cortina we must similarly convey a message of peace and dialogue... to halt conflicts during the Olympics," he declared.
