Israelis commemorate two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace talks continue
Citizens have assembled around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.
The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"The bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the leader stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed state memorials until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still took place across the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the proposal.
A high-ranking delegate familiar with the negotiations indicated that an night meeting of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.
The source said the morning session finished without significant progress, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.
He commented that the discussions are "tough and have not yet achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the differences between the two sides.
Essential Matters in Talks
- A lasting truce
- The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies deliveries
- Future governance of the territory
Public Feeling
In the city's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "No location seems like home now and until each abducted person return no one will feel safe."
"Once we see all home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to recover," she added.
Outside the leader's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.
Activist a participant explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Research now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of the population prefer the hostilities to finish in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Conditions
At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.
From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers reported the severe Israeli shelling persisted.
In the urban center, attacks were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side neighborhood, sector and Nasr districts and in the east side district of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"As the evening comes, the fear comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.
"My family are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, particularly my little child who places his face on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we check the news to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will return to us."
Medical Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had received the remains of half dozen people by the midday, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported another two victims had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking assistance to the south, medical staff said.
