Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the images originated relied on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
