European Union Economic Leaders Gather to Discuss Unlocking €140 Billion in Frozen Russian Assets for Kyiv Funding
European Union finance ministers are meeting in Brussels this Thursday to address the bloc's financial agenda, including the increasingly urgent question of funding for the Ukrainian government.
Zelenskyy States Country's Survival Relies on Allies
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in a latest interview that the country's survival depended on obtaining more funds from allies.
“We trust, God bless, we will get this decision,” he told reporters. Otherwise, “We will have to find an alternative, it’s a question of our survival. For this reason we need it urgently. We rely on partners.”
European Authorities Advocates €140 Billion Reparations Loan
The EU executive continues to aim to persuade participating countries – and Belgium, that is currently blocking the plan due to juridical concerns – to proceed with a €140bn financial compensation using frozen Russian assets.
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen insisted today that it would be “the optimal method to support Ukraine’s defence and national finances.”
Decision Postponed Until Year-End Meeting
A final decision on the issue has been postponed till the European Council meeting in December, with the funding required at the start of the coming year.
Discussions Occur Amid Corruption Scandal in Ukraine
But the talks are happening during a difficult moment for Ukraine, as the president was forced to address growing public outrage in the country over a corruption scandal in the energy sector, firing several officials allegedly involved in participating in a large-scale bribery scheme.
Denmark's economic affairs minister Stephanie Lose was questioned on her reaction to the scandal, and affirmed that there was commitment to keep aiding the Ukrainian people.
“Naturally, The country will have to continuously work with improvements, strengthening all parts of their society [and] including anti-corruption … but it is clear that Europe stands firmly behind Kyiv,” she said.
