The former president indicated that a meeting could occur with New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, informing journalists that Mamdani requested discussions, adding, “we will arrange a meeting” despite being political polar opposites who have shared sharp words.

Sunday Announcement

“A meeting in Washington is his preference, and we’ll work something out,” Trump declared Sunday evening, referring to Mamdani, the young progressive politician who won the New York City mayoral election during the November election. “Our goal is New York’s success.”

Mayor-Elect’s Stance

His team remained silent about the presidential statement, but in an interview last week Mamdani said that he planned to reach out to the White House before assuming leadership “given this connection vital for municipal operations”.

“I plan to take initiative in my duties,” he declared. “And I think that is because of the responsibility for the city’s entire population as their elected leader, it is important that you are open to working with anyone regardless of political differences.”

Asked what he would tell Trump, Mamdani said he would say: “My focus is serving all residents that calls this city home, and when opportunities for cooperation arise towards that end, I am prepared, and should New Yorkers face harm, resistance will follow.”

Previous Conflicts

Possible discussions between these figures follows repeated attacks by Trump throughout the election period, describing him as extreme, suggesting financial consequences from the city if he won, and entertaining the idea regarding his legal status – prompting strong criticism as threatening democratic principles and silencing dissent for engaged citizens: if you speak up, they will come for you.”

The president supported the rival candidate ex-governor Cuomo, who ran an independent campaign for mayor after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani.

Political Discourse

Across the election period, Mamdani consistently challenged Trump and his policies, particularly on immigration measures. But, the mayor-elect consistently stated that upon winning office, he would work with the president if reducing expenses for residents across the city.

Post-Victory Remarks

During his acceptance address, Mamdani declared that “should anyone demonstrate the country’s disappointment with Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him”, noting that “frightening authoritarian figures requires eliminating the circumstances that allowed him to accumulate power”.”

“This approach counters Trump; it prevents future similar figures” the mayor-elect elaborated. “So, President Trump, given your likely attention, consider this brief statement: Turn the volume up.”

Further into his remarks, he stated: “So hear me, Mr. Trump, with this message: attacking single residents you will have to get through all of us.”

Transition Period

Official duties will commence assuming the mayoral position January 1st.
