Crew Member Reveals Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the mission, such as increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
