Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Charity
Relinquishing undesired gifts can be seen as slightly impolite – except if it's done the right way.
A Philanthropic Clear-Out
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 items bestowed upon her by foreign dignitaries on official trips. The diverse haul reportedly features objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.
The collection, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold via competitive bidding by a Italian art dealer. An exact timeline has not been finalized, although the intention is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the proceeds benefiting various charities.
Palazzo Chigi Treasures
These gifts are said to be kept in a storage room on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. Sources state that Meloni furthermore considering auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been gathering dust over a long period.
A complete inventory is yet to be made public, but a glimpse was gleaned earlier this year when a comprehensive document of official presents was presented in parliament. The query raised whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.
An International Assortment of Presents
The collection includes:
- A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from Moldova.
- Various other items including makeup, a board, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," observers have said.
Political Context
Meloni has been credited, particularly from within her party, with garnering support from global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.
The forthcoming sale symbolizes a novel approach to deal with the protocol gifts that build up during a leader's tenure.
