Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
One of the original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated that parent company Unilever stopped the launch for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the business alongside his partner, announced how he will personally create the controversial flavor as part of a personal series highlighting issues the company was prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement intensifies the continuing disagreement among the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have asserted that Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed via an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions for naming options and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for support for Palestinians because of its coloration, which match those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism plus Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
The new product line will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that was first created in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes and Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties that address concerns which the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at the company recently, following decades of involvement, citing concerns regarding how its independence was undermined after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to keep working within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise the social mission, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
