One can find many contenders for the title of “world’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, though, that honor belongs to a mechanised timber mill invented by Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, building a modest merchant vessel required around 10 sawyers working for 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven lumber mills, an identical quantity of cut lumber could be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Thanks to their rapid mechanical cutter, which converted timber to boards with almost no human effort, the Dutch were able to build vessels more quickly than anyone else, which unleashed one hundred years of Dutch maritime, financial as well as artistic supremacy in the continent and the globe.

Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial authentic factory machine.” A windmill turned a gear. A single part converted its rotary movement to vertical motion for the saw. Another component changed the spinning motion into a lateral movement feeding the timber toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead one precise increment each cycle.
“Each element was simple on its own. The Dutchman’s genius was to combine these parts so they operated within a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing on every descending stroke while moving with each upward motion. It was an astonishingly intelligent application of fundamental components.”
