‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s path from rehabilitation to scoring with Athletic Bilbao

Whenhe first time Gorka Guruzeta featured in England, an young playing for the reserve team against German opponents at the English ground in the 2015 season, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he appeared in England, against the Black Cats weeks after, he netted. The third time, against the Citizens soon after, sure enough, he scored again. As he revisited to Manchester to play against the Red Devils at Leigh’s ground in that year, he scored again. It was a superb volley, also. “Actually,” he says, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve netted.” Thus the club did what they had to do: he was replaced.

“I got well angry,” the forward says, before breaking into laughter. “I’m sure there’s footage. We went to play United and I was in fine form. They didn’t let me play the final 45 minutes: I was without a signed my contract, I kept finding the net, many stories circulated, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about Man United, the typical thing. I’m not certain how true it was, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at Bilbao. I’m fortunate to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the training ground, the city, the early training is ready to commence; following that, the quick travel to Loiu airport and a further journey to Britain, this time to play Newcastle in the Champions League on midweek. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. It has become a difficult season for the team, partially owing to the demands of their participation. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their past eight league games and lost against Arsenal and Dortmund in Europe. But, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and those that lie ahead, and a sense of thankful reflection from him.

In the 36 months since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a final four contender in Europe, prevented from reaching a domestic final by Manchester United, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river surrounded by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the club’s first trophy in 40 years. Now he is the top goal-getter in the UCL, where they are unique and making their first appearance in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.

He considered it difficult enough just to make the first team and he was right. Born to the one-time rival player the former professional and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, the forward is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed the Arsenal manager, the former star and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he experienced a ACL injury, the cut, a demotion and a return before he could earn his place, making his comeback to experience the peak of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the UCL.

“You go into the academy not expecting to reach the first team but each step you advance through you’re still there and you can observe the approach. You make it and … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his debut and that period. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games with them and my knee gave way.

“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the perspective. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits new to you. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then head home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: do them.

“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have been in battles 200,000 times. Highly robust. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. So what happens, happens. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but additional work remains. Teammates are set, really ready; you have to be too.”

Minutes are crucial. The striker moved upset in 2020, in his early twenties, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he scored three times in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the he found his form. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, work, believe, and if one day the requirement appears where you play, a return could happen. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. All the more so after the previous season which, on occasions, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with 16 in 2023-24, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
