Alexander Zverev Battles Felix Auger-Aliassime in Season-Ending Championships Match

Preamble

The inherent challenges of group stage tennis often result in during this phase of the ATP World Tour Finals fans frequently find themselves confused, scrambling about for a mathematical tool and trying to work out the complex permutations of qualification. However today's game between Zverev and Auger-Aliassime, mercifully, is easy. It's a direct elimination: the successful player secures a semi-final matchup against Carlos Alcaraz at this season-ending event; the loser goes home.

The German is the frontrunner for this: the world No 3 is the more experienced competitor, has previously won at this tournament previously on two instances and holds the advantage in their personal record with six victories against three defeats, having won both their past encounters on an indoor hard court.

Yet … this type of playing field on which the Canadian has won the majority of his titles, he’s riding a high after his impressive recovery against Ben Shelton on Wednesday and he defeated Zverev in the US Championships early stage in August. Additionally, the court pace is quicker in the host city than at the US Open venue, which works even more in the Canadian's favor.

If Zverev holds back, as he did against Sinner, and the Canadian presses the European player with his stinging serves and fearless play, it could well be the young Canadian – the former prodigy who was previously positioned ahead of the younger champions to succeed the legendary trio – who secures the uncertain distinction of competing with the top-ranked player on Saturday.

The match starts: at approximately 8:30 PM in Turin, 7.30pm GMT.
